In 1990, Bill Gates was interviewed by influential technology journalist Robert Metcalfe on how he sees the future of computing and for a brief moment in time, it becomes clear that Gates' view was very different from what we know today.
During the interview, Gates bemoans some of the aspects of computing that were rapidly changing duirng the time of the interview. Gates mocks the notion that we would have computers in our homes, saying "Yeah, that's about as likely as my sitting here bored to death with a great book on my lap" and goes on to say how network computing is a "crappy thing."
A few minutes into the interview, Metcalfe asks Gates about the new view on computing and whether he wants to respond.
And that is where things get interesting for Gates, who says that he doesn't really like talking about technology and computer trends because it's always wrong in retrospect.ring his lifetime and says "I'm worried about what will happen to society if people keep always connected." By emailing me this clip, Elon Musk shared it with his followers on Twitter to remind us that not all those who are predicting a bleak future for technology have the same idea as others.
